Add Page Numbers to a PDF Online

Numbering pages makes long documents far easier to reference, review, and cite. How it works

When you select a PDF, the file is loaded into your browser's memory and the numbers are drawn directly into each page. Because the work to number PDF pages happens entirely on your device, nothing is sent to a remote server and no watermark is added to your output. It stays fast even on large files and works the same across Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android.

Formats, positions, and styling

You control how the numbering looks so it fits the document instead of fighting it:

• Position: place numbers in any of six spots — top-left, top-center, top-right, bottom-left, bottom-center, or bottom-right.
• Format: choose a plain count like 1, a fraction like 1/10, or a labelled style such as Page 1 or Page 1 of 10.
• Start number: begin at 1, or set a different starting value when the PDF is one section of a larger work.
• Size and color: adjust the font size and pick a color so the numbers stay readable against your page background.

Honest limitations

This tool inserts page numbers, not full headers or footers, so it does not add running titles, dates, or logos. Numbering is applied across the whole document with a single format and counts up sequentially — it does not skip pages or switch between roman and arabic numerals partway through. The numbers are drawn on top of the existing page content, so on a very dense layout you may want to try a corner with more whitespace. If a PDF is password protected, unlock it first so the pages can be edited.
